Oncor’s Smart Texas initiative educated the public about the utility’s efforts to modernize infrastructure.

As part of the program, I designed the narrative for a permanent structure and built out a traveling exhibit that moved throughout Oncor’s coverage area.

I conceived the permanent center as a living town.

The experience I designed begins with a traditional seated presentation. Then, rather than referring to a demonstration model, the presentation screen opens to a balcony overlooking a full-size town.

I designed the town so that each building would focus on a particular constituency or use case, allowing guides to tailor tours to particular stakeholder interests. Built inside a warehouse, stakeholders could see actual equipment at work rather than scale models.

The traveling experience moved throughout Oncor's service area, educating consumers about the benefits from the new infrastructure.

The new system would allow Oncor to react to outages quickly, exempt critical customers during planned outages, and enable consumers to understand how to lower their bills.

In just six weeks, I designed and built out an experience that opens to include stations with informational videos, interactive kiosks, and info panels. The imagery I chose for the walls uses sunlight as a metaphor for power and communicates the new opportunity this infrastructure offers Texas.

I centered the exhibit's narrative around educating consumers about their electricity usage, and the demonstration center allows them to experience the differences in energy usage for common household appliances.
